The History of Advent Lutheran Church

In 1984 Grace Lutheran Church of Hartville and St John Lutheran Church of Uniontown united to become one congregation. Prior to that time, the two churches had long standing traditions of ministry and mission in their communities dating back to the early 1800s.  But the Holy Spirit was up to something new.  The people of St John and Grace were open to the guiding of the Holy Spirit.  In the process, of the merger, several names were suggested for this new congregation.  The name that was selected was Advent Lutheran Church.

The name Advent was chosen because it spoke of the heart of this new family of believers.  “We will bring the spirit of Christ to the [expanded] community.  We will be in a new congregation witnessing for Christ…”

In 2015, Advent continued to be led by the Holy Spirit as it embarked on the “Growing our Faith” initiative.  This expansion allowed more restrooms, along with Sunday school classrooms to be added and the addition of the infant toddler rooms to our church’s outreach ministry, Adventure Place Preschool.

Statement of Faith

We believe in the Triune God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — and confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the Word of God incarnate, through whose life, death, and resurrection God fashions a new creation (ELCA Constitution 2.01–2.02).

We receive the canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God, the authoritative source and norm of our faith and life (ELCA Constitution 2.03), and we confess the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds as true declarations of that faith (ELCA Constitution 2.05).

With the wider Lutheran tradition, we affirm that we are justified by grace through faith for Christ's sake, not by our own merit (Augsburg Confession, Art. IV), and that God instituted the ministry of Word and Sacrament to deliver this grace to us (Augsburg Confession, Art. V). We hold that the church is the assembly of believers among whom the Gospel is purely preached and the sacraments rightly administered (Augsburg Confession, Art. VII), and we accept the whole Book of Concord as a true witness to the Gospel (ELCA Constitution 2.06–2.07).

We celebrate Holy Baptism and Holy Communion as means of grace through which Christ comes to us and claims us as his own (Small Catechism, Sacrament of Holy Baptism and Sacrament of the Altar).

Formed by this grace, we are called into a community of worship, welcome, and service to our neighbor and the world (ELCA Social Statement, Church in Society: A Lutheran Perspective, 1991).

We believe the Gospel compels us to welcome all people as beloved children of God, and to work for dignity, justice, and equity for all — advocating for peace and reconciliation among the nations, caring for the marginalized, embracing and welcoming racially and ethnically diverse populations, and standing in solidarity with the poor and oppressed (ELCA Model Constitution for Congregations, C4.03.d; ELCA Social Statement, Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity, and Culture, 1993).
